South Korea has recorded more than 5 million 5G mobile subscribers, according to data released by the country’s Ministry of Science and ICT.

The figures show that South Korean operators racked up a combined 5.37 million 5G subscribers by the end of February 2020, representing an increase of around 8 per cent on the previous month.

SK Telekom, KT Corp and LG Uplus became the first operators in the world to launch 5, when South Korea kicked off the 5G era with its launch in April 2019. Since then, all three operators have aggressively promoted 5G to their subscribers while they have begun scaling out their initial network offering in earnest.

According to the Ministry of Science and ICT data, SK Telecom accounted 44.9 per cent of all 5G subscribers in the country, while KT had 30.2 per cent and LG Uplus 24.8 per cent.

South Korean telcos had secured a total of 4 million 5G network subscribers by October 2019 but 5G take up has slowed in recent months. It is not yet clear how the global Covid 19 pandemic will affect 5G uptake or network buildout in the country.
