Hong Kong launches 5G mobile services

Three out of Hong Kong’s four mobile network operators have kicked off their next generation mobile services by launching 5G services across the city.

On the 1st of April 2020, HKT, Three Hong Kong and China Mobile Hong Kong all unveiled their 5G networks, offering consumer services for the first time in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong’s fourth network operator, SmarTone has yet to confirm when it will launch its own 5G network.

All three operators who launched 5G yesterday did so using their recently acquired spectrum in the 3.5GHz band.

While Hong Kongers will welcome the move as a huge step forward in the territories digital journey, coverage levels are proving tricky to ascertain, with none of the operators releasing details of how many base stations have been deployed and where.

China Mobile Hong Kong said that its next generation mobile network reached 90 per cent of the heavily populated business districts of Hong Kong Island and into portions of Kowloon.

All three operators have entry level tariffs available for around HKD250 ($33) per month for around 8Gb of data.
