Huawei becomes Europe’s most prolific filer of technology patents
Huawei beat regional rivals Samsung and LG to the tech patent top spot in 2019
A new industry report has revealed that Huawei filed more European patent applications than any other company last year, cementing its reputation as one of the world’s pioneering forces in tech research and development.
A new report by the European Patent Office, showed that Huawei filed 3,524 patent applications in 2019. The report also noted that patents filed by Chinese technology producers have seen a six fold increase since 2010.
Huawei has signed more than 90 5G launch deals with operators around the world, and now says that it is focused on helping operators scale up their initial 5G offerings.
“Of [our] patent applications, around two thirds of those were in the field of digital communications, including the development of 5G technology. Huawei has already been leading 5G expansion globally, now focusing on vertical industry, ecosystem, and 5G talent development in 2020,” a Huawei spokesman said in a statement to the press.
Huawei led the way with 3,524 European patent applications in 2019, followed by Samsung on 2,858 and LG on 2,817.
European heavyweight Siemens was fifth with 2,619 patent applications and Swedish telecoms giant Ericsson came seventh with 1,616 patent applications filed.
Since being added to the US’ Banned Entity list in 2019, Huawei has ramped up productions of its own chips and components, in an attempt to lessen its dependence on external supply chains.
