Photo-finish in DVD race

A survey conducted by US-based analysts NPD Group suggest that sales of Blu-ray and high definition (HD) DVD players are neck-and-neck in the ongoing format war but further studies indicate that sales of Blu-ray DVD titles are outstripping HD’s performance.

NPD’s figures reveal that 52% of next-generation DVD players sold between April and December of 2006 were HD-DVD players while sales of Blu-ray-compatible devices  accounted for 48% during the same period.

However, the study failed to include sales of Sony’s Blu-ray-equipped PlayStation 3 or Microsoft’s HD-enabled Xbox 360 DVD -extension  drive.

Both products were officially introduced to the US market in November, 2006, with industry pundits suggesting that PS3 shipments dwarfed the rival offering from Microsoft. Media reports also suggest that PS3 unit shipments have already exceeded the one million mark in both the US and Japanese markets.

Further studies by Nielsen Video Scan claim that Blu-ray DVD sales surpassed their HD rivals in the opening two weeks of January by more than two-to-one.

Nielsen’s results stated that Blu-ray titles outsold HD discs at a ratio of 100:47 during the first week of January.

The gap opened further in the second week when Blu-ray sales again outperformed HD figures by 100:38.

The study also suggested that Blu-ray DVD sales were buoyed by the introduction of Sony’s PlayStation 3.
