Saudi Telecom wins award

Saudi Telecom (STC) has picked up the award for Best Service Provider IP NGN Infrastructure of the Year at the Cisco Networkers Innovation Awards at Cannes last week.

Saudi Telecom (STC) has picked up the award for Best Service Provider IP NGN Infrastructure of the Year at the Cisco Networkers Innovation Awards at Cannes last week.

Eissa Aqeeli, general manager for network engineering, and Abdulmalik Ibrahim Al-Marshad, contracts and products director for network engineering, both at STC, picked up the award on behalf of the Saudi incumbent telco.

“It’s fantastic to have all the hard work on this project rewarded like this,” said Maher Hassan, STC’s account manager at Cisco.

“STC has laid a foundation for a very broad set of services and features – they’ve taken a level of reach into areas that not only haven’t had these advanced services, but may not have had any communications at all,” said Tony Bates (pictured), senior vice president and general manager of the Service Provider Routing Technology Group at Cisco, who sponsored the award.

“It’s a country-transformation project – it’s laying down broadband and IP services, but that’s against a backdrop of improving other areas such as education and social welfare,” added Bates in an interview after the awards ceremony.

Middle Eastern organisations had a strong showing at the awards, with nominations for Jordan Telecom, UAE second operator du, and Saudi Post across several categories.

The Cisco Networkers Innovation Awards aim to recognise some of Cisco customers’ most advanced and high-profile projects, across seven categories.

Cisco Networkers 2007 attracted more than 3,000 network professionals to Cannes in the South of France this year.
