Enterprise router sales climb in fourth quarter

Sales of enterprise routers rose 6% during Q4 of 2006 to reach US$1.1 billion, according to Infonetics Research.

Sales of enterprise routers rose 6% during Q4 of 2006 to reach US$1.1 billion, according to Infonetics Research.

The analyst firm said the WAN optimisation appliance market performed particularly well during the quarter with sales rising 23% overall.

The enterprise router segment was led by Cisco, which captured 75% of worldwide revenue, followed by Huawei and then Juniper Networks.

However, Infonetics said that while the underlying demand for routers is strong, with unit shipments expected to pass the three million mark in 2009, intense competition and price erosion were curbing revenue growth.

Despite this, the company said it was still projecting a 13% increase in global revenue for routers to US$4.8 billion between 2006 and 2009.
