Saudi telecom appoints sun for server deal

Sun Microsystems has won contracts worth US$7million from Saudi Telecom Company (STC).

The telco said last week it has signed two enterprise agreements and two project contracts with Sun, as well as choosing its Sun Fire E25K high-end servers and Solaris operating system to underpin a server consolidation project.

STC said the consolidation was aimed at lowering the operator's total cost of ownership, while giving it more flexibility.

"Sun has continually shown a firm commitment to STC and as we maintain our market leadership, Sun's support will become increasingly critical to us," said Sulaiman Al Othman, general manager of IT planning at STC.

Sun already provides platforms that power STC's GSM services, BSS/OSS and date networks.
