PC market led by notebooks
Notebook shipments in MEA rose more than 50% during Q4 last year, according to figures from IDC.
Year-on-year growth in notebook sales in MEA, and similarly impressive growth in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), contributed to a 28% increase in mobile PC shipments across EMEA during Q4, the analyst firm said.
IDC said the notebook market continued to drive overall PC sales in the region, with desktop shipments failing to return to "positive trends".
The firm said the rising importance of the mobile PC market during 2006 highlighted the need for manufacturers to develop strong product and branding strategies.
"This year has clearly marked, through the accelerated development of the notebook market, the importance of effective and time-to-market product strategies and the need for vendors to develop stronger branding strategies," said Karine Paoli, research director for IDC's EMEA Personal Computing group.
