Cisco is implementing a US$267million fibre optic network in Saudi Arabia, IT Weekly can reveal.

The networking giant is working with a group of firms on the telecom project and will be the consultant and network vendor, a representative of Cisco confirmed to IT Weekly this week.

The project, which was announced last year, is a joint collaboration between Mobily, Integrated Telecom Company (ITC) and Bayanat Al-Oula. The network will cover 12,000km of highways and cities across the Kingdom.

Bayanat Al-Oula and ITC are to use the network for data services, while Mobily will add to its mobile network services.
