Apple reportedly wants to have its own 5G modem ready by 2021

Apple acquires Intel's modem business for $1 billion

Apple confirmed reports that it will acquire Intel's 5G modem business for $1 billion.

This would mean that Apple is now pushing its focus on its own wireless modems for the iPhone reducing reliance on other chip makers. It currently has a six year contract with Qualcomm so it's likely that their own propriety modems will be applied to their flagship models and future designs reliant on network connectivity while they rely on Qualcomm for the lower end devices.

While Intel does have its rights to build modems for other platforms excluding phones it does mean that Apple's added infrastructure could see the company push out a 5G modem in less than two years.

From the report it says that Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook has also long said the company wants to control its own technological fate, what analysts have called the 'Cook Doctrine.;

"We believe that we need to own and control the primary technologies behind the products that we make," Tim Cook told investors back in 2009.
