Alcatel-Lucent Nortel deal gets the green light

The telecom giant has finally completed its acquisition of Nortel’s UMTS infrastructure business.

Alcatel, which recently merged with Lucent, announced in September its intention to acquire the Nortel division for US$320 million, but the deal had been held up by regulators in the US.

Having cleared regulatory approval last month, the deal closed on December 31.

The move makes Alcatel-Lucent one of the largest providers of universal mobile telecommunication systems (UMTS) equipment, according to Alcatel-Lucent, which claims that one in four UMTS operators worldwide uses its products.

Approximately 1,700 employees from Nortel’s UMTS unit are expected to join Alcatel-Lucent, including a large number from the company’s research and development division.

Alcatel completed its merger with Lucent Technologies in November 2006.
