The event at the Public Authority for Civil Aviation was intended to showcase projects by Sas.VR and the potential of AR and VR technology.

The Information Technology Authority (ITA) of Oman has held a showcase of AR and VR technology at the Public Authority for Civil Aviation.

The event was held to present the benefits and different applications of VR and AR, as well as sharing experiences of effective use of these technologies.

The event, which was presented by the ITA's Sas Center for Virtual Reality, was attended by Eng. Omar Bin Salim Alshanfari, Deputy CEO for Operations at the ITA, along with a number of representatives from government and private entities.

During the session, Occidental of Oman, the Military Technological College, and Oman Medical Specialty Board / Medical Simulation Center presented and discussed their experiences in using virtual and augmented reality technologies.

The event was accompanied by an exhibition which presented eight VR and AR projects developed by the graduates of Sas.VR Center in cooperation with different entities. The projects included games, VR applications for training and educational purposes and immersive VR environment for some tourism and heritage sites in Oman.

"Sas Center for Virtual Reality (Sas.VR) was established in 2014 to be a regional center that provides the infrastructure needed for developing virtual reality applications and multimedia content as well as skills development by providing training to Omani talented people and encouraging them to be entrepreneurs in this field," said Muna Bint Khalfan Alshithani, Senior Projects Specialist at ITA.

"Virtual Reality is a full digital virtual reality environment -mostly three dimensional that allows users to live an interactive real digital experience. Whereas Augmented Reality is based on the addition of virtual contents on real environment examples of which are some of the games and apps such as SnapChat and Pokemon," she explained.

Muneer Bin Hammad Almahrooqi, the Military Technology College, one of the entities that benefited from Sas.VR training, described the VR training Center which was established at the college to serve the practical needs of all the specializations.

Bader Bin Saif Allamki, Head of Training and Development Team at Occidental Oman, presented the company's experience in using VR in training and development for personnel, to manage reduced training budgets.

Khalid Khalifa Alkhanbashi from the Medical Simulation Center at Oman Medical Specialty Board presented the Center's experience in benefiting from Sas.VR Training. The centre tested VR in a number of use cases, across different stages of patient care, which enabled doctors to share cases and exchange knowledge.

"A practical application has been implemented for a number of cases in different parts of the body starting from the arrival of the patient until treatment, And then we benefited from the virtual reality technology to describe those cases and to deal with them medically so that doctors can benefit from each in his field to see all those cases and learn from them. This saved a lot of money and time of trainees and give high accuracy of training."

It is worth  to mention that virtual reality has several other uses in medicine, manufacturing, marketing, entertainment, defense, oil and gas, tourism, environment, industry, architecture, engineering and heritage.
