Red Dead Redemption 2 sets record for opening weekend
RDR2 sells $725m in first three days, making it second largest entertainment launch ever
The launch of Rockstar Games' Red Dead Redemption 2 has become the second highest entertainment launch of all time, grossing $725m in retail in the space of three days.
The Wild West video game, launched on 26th October, giving it the highest ever opening ‘weekend' (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) in the history of entertainment, according to developer Rockstar. Stablemate Grand Theft Auto V holds the record for the most sales at launch, with over $1bn retail sales in three days, although GTAV launched mid-week.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is an open world video game set in the old West of the USA, which puts the player in the role of an outlaw, Arthur Morgan. The game has received rave reviews, particularly for the level of detail in the open world environment and depth of immersion.
Rockstar said that the game is also the biggest entertainment launch of 2018, and has become the most pre-ordered game on PlayStation Network and gained the most sales in one day for a full price game on PlayStation Network.
