Acquisition to boost hyperconverged infrastructure vendor’s cloud stack

Nutanix to acquire Frame for $165m
Bozinovic says Nutanix shares Frame's vision of simplifying critical IT functions.

Hyperconverged infrastructure vendor Nutanix, has reached a $165m deal to buy Mainframe2 (Frame), a cloud-based desktop virtualisation and application delivery company.

While it already provides on-premises virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) via its hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI), the Frame acquisition once completed, will allow Nutanix to offer cloud-delivered VDI, or desktops-as-a-service (DaaS).

A Gartner report published in June forecasts that by 2019, half of all new VDI users will be deployed on DaaS platforms.

When the acquisition closes (Nutanix expects it to happen later this month), Frame will support one-click desktop instances on Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure. It plans to add support for Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Nutanix Xi Cloud, which is the company's hybrid cloud offering.

With Frame, Nutanix will address customer requirements for DaaS in the mid-market, while continuing its long-standing support for large-scale VDI projects delivered via enterprise data centres. This includes continued support for VMware Horizon View, as well as remaining Citrix Ready certified for Citrix XenDesktop and XenApp. Frame provides Nutanix customers another deployment option for delivering virtual desktops.

"Companies desperately need a cloud-native desktop solution for their multi-cloud environments which combines the performance of on-prem offerings with the flexibility and cost optimisation of the cloud. That's why we built Frame," said Nikola Bozinovic, founder and CEO at Frame. "Nutanix shares our vision of simplifying critical IT functions so companies can save money, save time and still achieve exceptional performance no matter their underlying infrastructure, and we are so proud to be joining the family."

Sunil Potti, chief product and development officer, Nutanix, said: "Frame's cloud-native technology represents everything we believe to be true in the market - customers want easy-to-use, high performance and cost optimised solutions that just work across the entirety of their infrastructure." Potti said Nutanix is committed to providing customers with a robust multi-cloud DaaS offering through Frame while working with channel partners to enable best-in-class enterprise VDI. "We are delighted to add the Frame technology, and the innovative thinkers behind it, to our family," he added.
