Etisalat preps for 5G
Telco makes announcement for network upgrade, set to take three months
Etisalat today announced that it is in the process of upgrading its mobile networks over the next three months as it prepares its network for 5G and IoT.
Etisalat said in statement the upgrade will be carried out in in incremental stages to ensure smooth and uninterrupted services.
Etisalat has committed to launching 5G services by 2020.
In May of last year, Ericsson and Etisalat jointly trialled 5G capabilities in a real world environment over a live network at Etisalat's head office in Abu Dhabi.
The two companies successfully demonstrated over 20 times greater performance than what was currently used in 4G networks. The 5G trial system used 800MHz of spectrum in the 15GHz band, where it tested speed, latency and beam steering.
In October, Etisalat trialled its fastest 5G, reaching speeds of 71Gbps in what the telco described as a global record.
And in December, Etisalat announced the successful launch of its first 5G ultra-mobile broadband experience in the region. A pre-commercial 5G network was deployed in certain locations within UAE including Abu Dhabi (UAE capital) and Dubai.
