Canadian University of Dubai has deployed an identity and password management system to help it to better manage its user base.

The university rolled out solutions from One Identity, part of Quest Software, to enable better visibility and reporting of processes, management of security, and quick turnaround of password resets and account provisioning down from a period of 24-48 hours to five minutes.

The university said it faced issues with managing passwords for large numbers of staff and students, particularly at start of term when bottlenecks developed as users forgot passwords over vacation. The university also had a range of disparate systems for each department, with decentralised management of each.

The university IT team said it was time consuming to provision so many accounts for different systems, and that the situation also posed a risk of ‘role creep', with users gaining unauthorised privileges. Assuring data integrity for students and the university was also an issue.

"Security is more critical than ever because data is the new wealth. We need to protect our brand identity, and we need to protect the students' data because we hold a lot of student information and we are responsible for protecting that data from internal and external threats. One Identity was very supportive of our security needs, and they were involved in helping us take it to the next step," explained Mohammad Fayaz, IT Applications Manager, Canadian University of Dubai.

The University selected One Identity Manager Solution and Password Manager, which provided a central repository for all ID across different systems. Along with the reductions in administration time, the solutions also provided better visibility, better problem solving and reporting, the university said.

"We have a reputation to safeguard, because we do not want to be just another statistic of an organization that has been hacked. One identity provided us the confidence and capabilities to grow with the product which is important because the product does not end just with the project implementation but is constantly evolving and changing due to the security landscape. We have to be as dynamic and adaptive," added Fayaz.
