GITEX Conferences kicks off with Amazon
Dr Werner Vogels, CTO, opened the GITEX conference series
The ever-popular GITEX Conference series was opened yesterday with a keynote presentation from Dr Werner Vogels, Chief Technology Officer at Amazon.com.
Vogels, presenting his first keynote address in the region, presented the story of how Amazon.com became the online giant it is today.
Among the themes covered by Vogels was how an experimental mindset helps drive continuous innovation on a worldwide scale for Amazon. He also highlighted how digital acceleration can create new opportunities and extolled entrepreneurs to work on things that truly differentiate their businesses.
Vogels also highlighted the importance of cloud to the most disruptive new businesses and discussed how Amazon is supporting its own cloud services with major investment into data centres in the region.
He highlighted regional success stories of companies that have built their services on AWS, including Anghami, the popular music streaming service. Anghami attracts three times as many users at night as during the day. If they had to buy hardware to cater to this demand, it would mean have to massively overbuild, with 80% overcapacity during the day. Cloud allows them to scale up or down as they require, and only pay for what they use.
The Amazon CTO pointed out how Amazon pioneered the subscription model, which allows customers to only pay for what they need, with no obligations, Vogels adds.
