Ignore DNS at your peril

Infoblox sees ME businesses paying more attention to DDI

Ignore DNS at your peril
There are a lot more IT entities today and the key is to understand how to manage all this infrastructure and endpoints, Sheet said.

Regional organisations will start paying greater attention to domain name system (DNS) security as they begin to understand the damaging consequences of inadequate DNS security measures.

DNS is a foundational Internet technology used in every non-trivial IP-based transaction, observed Ashraf Sheet, regional director, Middle East & Africa at Infoblox. If its not working properly, internet transactions can grind to a halt leading to disastrous results including lost revenue due to downtime, diminished customer satisfaction and lost productivity.

Further, DNS and DHCP services have been taken for granted in the past. Today it is not advisable to run these services on routers and general-purpose hardware, not only because they are coming under attack, but because they need to be able to scale. They need to be enterprise grade secure, reliable services that the organisation can depend on, because without them the enterprise will not be able to compute, said Sheet.

DNS, DHCP and IPAM automation solutions will be big on the horizon and obviously these are technology areas where Infoblox leads the market, he added.

Infoblox delivers critical network services that protect DNS infrastructure, automate cloud deployments, and increase the reliability of enterprise and service provider networks around the world. With competence in DNS, DHCP, and IP address management, the category known as DDI, Infoblox reduces the risk and complexity of networking. Our solutions automate network-control functions to reduce costs and maximize uptime, and they protect against the rising flood of malware and distributed-denial-of-service DDoS attacks. From discovery, configuration, and compliance to DNS, DHCP, and IP address management, our technology automates and simplifies complex processes, said Sheet.

The Infoblox Grid solution delivers high availability and provides a network database for real-time and historical reporting. And our purpose-built DNS security solutions defend against a wider range of threats than any other product available, Sheet added.

IT trends such as cloud, big data, virtualisation, security and mobility are creating significant challenges as well as opportunities for some of the largest customers in the energy, government, telecom and finance sectors.

The region is in the midst of a wave of IT transformation and modernisation and the opportunities for Infoblox and other IT leaders are substantial, said Sheet.

Regional organisations will focus on security as the number one area of IT spend given the fact that not only is the threat landscape constantly changing, but also the political turmoil in certain countries is adding another dimension of cyber warfare, said Sheet.

IoT creates more centres and end-points connected to the world of the internet where machine to machine and human to machine interactions will increase. All this is a huge change from the past where the perimeter of the organisation was defined and the IT department knew exactly how many PCs were connected to the network. Today, there are a lot more IT entities, some of them which you cant even see (virtual machine) and the key is to understand how to manage all this infrastructure and endpoints, Sheet said.

Therefore, IP address management (IPAM) solutions will be increasingly deployed in future. IPAM tools give organisations the ability to discover all the infrastructure/ endpoints, visualise them and put policies on who and which devices can enter the network and what they can do, Sheet observed.

Organisations are facing a challenge of breaches and are therefore working to strengthen their IT security. In this area, Infoblox offers three security solutions.

The first is Infrastructure Protection. Infrastructure is the foundation that supports applications and services. Because Infrastructure is so critical, Infoblox provides organisations with full visibility of devices, remediates the ones which are vulnerable and non-compliant and most importantly, maintains DNS availability against attacks. This ensures the utmost service continuity, Sheet explained.

The second is Data Protection and Malware Mitigation which focuses on protecting against botnets and any exfiltration of confidential information. Whether it's credit card information, or intellectual property, data needs to be protected.

Infoblox disrupts the cyberkill chain through its unique position on the network. With curated up-to date threat intelligence, blocks data being exfiltrated over the DNS channel, and ultimately identifies infected devices, accelerating remediation though its ecosystem integration, said Sheet.

The third solution is Threat Containment and Operations. With todays evolving threats and attacks, its not only about stopping breaches but also the ability to respond quickly and effectively considering the big disconnect between security controls and teams.  Infoblox helps ease security operations by eliminating silos, providing better context and consolidated threat intelligence and providing network and security orchestration for automating incident response, he added.
