Apple and IKEA to create AR-enabled furniture app
IKEA is creating an augmented reality app to help customers visualise furniture before they buy
Apple and flat-pack furniture manufacturer IKEA are joining forces to create an augmented reality enabled furniture app.
Using an iPhone or iPad, the AR-enables app will enable users to visualise how IKEA's furniture could look in their home, office or garden before visiting the store or even buying the furniture.
Apple launched its ARKit at its annual WWDC conference in June, and announced IKEA was one of its partners working on an AR app.
Michael Valdsgaard, leader of Digital Transformation at Inter Ikea, said: "This will be the first augmented reality app that will enable you to make buying decisions."
Valdsgaard revealed that the app will feature 3D renders of 500 to 600 pieces of furniture, and possibly a buy now tool allowing users to purchase products directly from the app.
The app is reportedly launching in September when iOS 11 becomes available.
