Popular messaging app WhatsApp suffered a global outage last night which lasted for several hours, leaving its 1.2 billion users offline and panicked.

Users from across the globe were unable to send and receive text messages, photos and videos, and could only see the app trying to connect.

A WhatsApp spokesperson said: "Earlier today, WhatsApp users in all parts of the world were unable to access WhatsApp for a few hours. We have now fixed the issue and apologise for the inconvenience."

The spokesperson did not specifically identify what caused the outage but said it was WhatsApp itself rather than an ‘external source'.

WhatsApp users instantly took to Twitter to express their frustrations, with some still stating they are unable to connect.

However according to DownDetector, a site which tracks real-time issues and outages, it is still showing users are experiencing problems.
