Lack of awareness has contributed to rasomware’s success, says Trend Micro

In the wake of increased targeted cyberattacks on Middle East organisations, security vendor Trend Micro Incorporated, has said it will outline its cyber security vision at GITEX Technology Week 2016.

The initiative according to Trend Micro, is part of its innovative cyber security solutions for the region as the company moves to spotlight the real dangers the region faces due to ransomware.

Ransomware is a type of malware that prevents or limits users from accessing their system, either by locking the system's screen or by locking the users' files unless a ransom is paid.

According to the company, modern ransomware families, collectively categorised as crypto-ransomware, encrypt certain file types on infected systems and forces users to pay the ransom through certain online payment methods to get a decrypt key.

Ihab Moawad, vice president, Trend Micro, Mediterranean, Middle East and Africa (MEA), said: "IT has become the backbone of businesses and government entities in the region increasingly as these organisations strive to meet customer and business needs. Investing in a robust security solution then becomes paramount. Without proper protection companies are deliberately putting themselves in harm's way."
Moawad said at GITEX Trend Micro will be showcasing industry leading security solutions, while giving visitors a chance to have their queries directly addressed by security experts.

He explained that the rapid development of ransomware has been recognised as a major security issue mainly because of one thing: it works. "From newsrooms to online reports, ransomware has undoubtedly been thrust into public consciousness, but has remained an unfamiliar concept to end users and businesses," he said.

"The unfamiliarity, unfortunately, has also largely contributed to ransomware's success."
Trend Micro is distributed in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) by Redington Value Distribution.
