The report touched upon the consequences of cybercrime, and found respondents lost almost a day when attempting to solve the situation.

Software security provider, Symantec, conducted a survey in Saudi Arabia and discovered over 6.5 million people were affected by cybercrime in 2015.

Cited on Arab News, the report, "Norton Cyber Security Insights" revealed that 6,538,262 people had fallen victim, with 46% of millennials stating they had experience cybercriminal activity, compared to 37% of the younger generation.

Eyas Hawari, country manager for Symantec Saudi Arabia, said: Unfortunately, online crime has become commonplace in Saudi Arabia with 58% of the population having experienced it in the past year. This is 10% higher than the global average of 48% and strongly reinforces the need for a shift in the mindset of consumers in the country."

Hawari pointed out that the increase of individuals connected and using mobile devices is making it easier for cybercriminals to attack. He stressed that individuals must be proactive in protecting their personal data, especially as the report revealed almost two in every five millennials admitted to sharing passwords despite understanding the risks.

Furthermore, the report disclosed one in seven users has had their identity stolen, one in six experienced a breach in their social media account and one in four say their email accounts has been hacked.

The report also touched upon the consequences of cybercrime, and found respondents lost almost a day when attempting to solve the situation, plus the average cost of SR3,230 per person.
