Netflix to buy Hollywood blockbuster starring Will Smith
Netflix is close to acquiring Hollywood blockbuster Bright, starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton
Netflix is expanding its streaming services as it nears to securing its biggest movie deal to date; "Bright", a supernatural cop film co-starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton.
Despite missing out on "The Birth of a Nation at Sundance", this deal could potentially open the gateway for other mainstream Hollywood blockbusters. It is rumoured that Netflix's budget is between $80 and $100m, and with Smith starring, the deal holds weight.
According to Hollywood Reporter, the film is a mix between "End of Watch" and "Alien Nation", where Smith plays a human cop and Edgerton plays an Orc in a fantasy world, and together they attempt to track down a powerful wand. The film will be directed by Suicide Squad's David Ayer.
Netflix has angered theatre chains in the past, as they have been reluctant to show Netflix movies the same day they appear online, for instance in the US, four major chains refused to screen "Beasts of No Nation" and other movies including, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". However, with Smith playing the lead role in Bright, a boycott seems unlikely.
