Encrypt everything, Gemalto’s SafeNet urges
Data protection specialist warns of dangers to region’s data
Encryption and data protection specialist SafeNet comes to this year's GITEX Technology Week as a recent acquisition of Dutch digital security company Gemalto, and its message to delegates is a stern warning of the dangers of leaving sensitive data unencrypted.
"This year is a special one for us because, further to the Gemalto acquisition that closed in January, we have now formed, within Gemalto, an Identity and Data Protection division, which includes the SafeNet data protection offering and also the e-banking and identity-and-access divisions of Gemalto," says Sebastien Pavie, Director, MEA Sales, Identity and Data Protection, Gemalto.
"Our theme this year is ‘Encrypt Everything', so encryption is at the very core of our IDP division, with a lot of crypto and key-management solutions, complemented by our strong authentication offering."
Gemalto, along with its new IDP unit formerly known as SafeNet, is launching two products at GITEX. The IDP division is introducing a mobile-device-friendly, contactless, smartcard solution for premises access, based on Bluetooth connectivity. Meanwhile, at Gemalto's corporate stand the company is demonstrating its e-banking suite, which Pavie describes as "a new generation in banking security... to not only address the strong authentication aspect, but also the whole security concept around it, which includes transactions, signing and encryption - all the things banks are looking for".
As the cyber-threat landscape evolves and organisations region-wide embrace IoT and smart-city initiatives, Pavie believes it has become ever more pressing to move to encryption-based strategies when securing data.
"We believe that companies nowadays shouldn't be shy of encrypting all their sensitive data, for a number of reasons," he explains. "One of them is because data breaches are hitting organisations in the region, and globally, on a larger and larger scale, and they are becoming more frequent. And secondly, because deploying encryption nowadays has become a lot easier, more manageable and a lot less invasive, in terms of performance and key management."
