Twitter launches curated-tweets service dubbed Moments
Service designed to allow users to following breaking news events easily
Twitter has launched a new service designed to help users keep up with breaking news around particular topics - without having to follow dozens of others or keep watch on hashtags.
The new service, dubbed Moments, offers a tab with a lightning-bolt logo within the Twitter app that reveals a list of trending topics or events. They're delivered like news stories on a website, and clicking on them reveals top tweets and conversations around the events unfolding.
Moments can be used to follow anything from breaking news events to sporting finals to big TV events. The list is updated regularly by Twitter staff, with top tweets curated by the same team.
"Moments helps you find the best of Twitter as easily as tapping an icon - regardless of who you follow. Just visit the new tab called Moments, where you will discover stories unfolding on Twitter," Twitter said in its announcement.
"Tapping on the new lightning bolt tab on your phone opens a list of Moments that matter now. As new stories emerge throughout the day, we continue to update this list. Looking for more? You can also swipe through to topics including ‘Entertainment' and ‘Sports' to find more stories from the past few days."
Moments are updated as new information or great Tweets become available. Twitter will also let users know if a story has been updated since their last view with a blue dot, which appears in the upper right-hand corner of the image associated with the Moment.
For stories that update very frequently - like live sporting events or awards shows where it's critical to know what's happening minute by minute - users will see an option to follow the Moment, which blends the Tweets directly into the timeline. When that story ends, so do the Tweets, leaving the user's timeline just as it was before.
For the moment, the new service is only available in the US on the Twitter apps for Android and iPhone. Twitter said that it was "hard at work" bringing the functionality to more places in "the coming weeks and months".
