Apple commits to electric-car project
Cupertino’s first automotive project, dubbed ‘Titan’, will be electric, but not autonomous
Apple is committed to an electric car project, with a build date of 2019, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.
While the term "ship date" was used in reference to the 2019 target, WSJ explained that Apple uses the term to describe the point at which engineers sign off on a final design.
The project is designated "Titan" and already has a staff of 600, including former auto-industry engineers and at least one academic, but insiders say project leads have been given the go-ahead to triple the size of that workforce.
In February, Reuters reported that Apple was exploring the possibility of building driverless cars to compete with Google, but the WSJ report claims Titan will not include autonomous technology.
