Chipped suitcases will be trackable on GPS

Samsung collaborates with Samsonite on smart luggage

Samsung Electronics is teaming up with luggage-maker Samsonite to design smart suitcases, fan site SamMobile reported.

The two companies will implant a chip inside an item of baggage that allows owners to locate it through GPS.

At first, this will be the suitcase's only functionality, but the duo are determined to expand upon the feature set, with future versions being able to send messages as they leave the aircraft's hold and as they enter airport carousels.

"We are working with Samsung to create something that is more than a gimmick," said Ramesh Tainwala, CEO, Samsonite.

It is not known when Samsonite might bring the smart luggage to market.
