Microsoft to ditch 'Windows'?
Speculation that Windows 9 may go with new name ahead of first preview event
Microsoft may be about to reveal a complete rebranding of its Windows operating system, according to analysts.
Reuters reports that Microsoft is due to give the first official preview of the latest version of the OS at an invite-only event in San Francisco on Tuesday.
The new OS is expected to either have a complete rebrand, or else just be called ‘Windows', the news agency said, citing industry analysts. The development project for the latest version of Windows is internally known as ‘Threshold', while externally it has been referred to as Windows 9.
A rebrand is thought likely to move away from the numbering convention, which started with Windows 7, because of the poor reception to Windows 8 and its touch-optimised interface.
The change is also possible as new CEO Satya Nadella looks to make his mark on the company.
