Operator promises HD voice, improved service as it gears up for VoLTE

Du set to embrace voice over LTE
Du will be the first operator in the Middle East to offer VoLTE services

Dubai-based operator Du has announced plans to start offering customers voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology.

This will make Du the first operator in the Middle East to offer VoLTE services. Du also claims to have rolled out a VoLTE network faster than any other operator in the world, having readied the network in 80 days.

VoLTE allows operators with 4G LTE capabilities to transfer voice traffic over the LTE network, rather than on older 2G and 3G systems. From a customer's point of view, this results in high-definition voice clarity, as well as greater quality of service, which includes a reduced call set-up time.

From the operator's point of view, VoLTE provides the chance to standardise all traffic across the network.

"With VoLTE, we will be exploiting the full potential of 4G LTE. Our commitment to our customers has been reconfirmed with this fastest installation and testing of VoLTE on a live network," said Saleem AlBalooshi, executive vice president of network development and operations at Du.

"VoLTE will significantly enhance the call experience for customers using our 4G LTE network, adding more value through the use of the latest technology innovations."

Du has been providing HD voice on mobile since 2012, though it has only been offered on its 3G and fixed-line networks. With VoLTE, however, the HD voice will be delivered more efficiently, with call set-up times of less than two seconds.

According to the TRA's 2013 Mobile Networks Benchmarking survey on quality of service, Du's UAE mobile network marginally leads on a number indicators to do with voice quality and call success rates.
