UAE SIM registration deadline looms
Telcos urge subscribers to avoid disconnection, as TRA’s 16 July cut-off date approaches
The UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority has set a Wednesday 16 July deadline for the registration of SIM cards with the country's telecoms providers.
The My Number, My Identity campaign was launched by the regulator in mid-2012 as a means to prevent fraudulent use of mobile phones. With seven days left to register SIMs, operators are urging customers to take action or risk being cut off.
"To avoid disconnection, Etisalat's non-registered mobile customers are encouraged to visit any of Etisalat's business centres or points of sale during Ramadan operational hours from 8am to 5pm, Sunday to Thursday and 8am to 1pm on Saturday," Abu Dhabi-based Etisalat said in a statement.
Etisalat claimed it had completed registrations for 95% of its mobile subscriber base.
In March 2013 Etisalat introduced a toll-free number, 800121, available in Arabic, English, Urdu and Malayalam, as a helpline for customers who are unsure of their registration status.
To register a SIM, UAE nationals must produce an Emirates ID card or passport. GCC nationals can present a GCC National ID and other nationalities should bring along their Emirates ID or passport along with valid residence visa. Business and government customers must present a valid establishment card issued by the UAE Ministry of Interior.
