Infrastructure specialist Riverbed Technology today announced the expansion of its Steelhead wide area network (WAN) optimisation line with an appliance designed to streamline backup and recovery.

Riverbed claims the Steelhead DX Edition 8000 can deliver "up to 60 times WAN performance acceleration and up to 99% bandwidth reduction", allowing more frequent backups and reduced recovery time.

"The new Steelhead DX Edition eliminates distance between data centres as a barrier to achieving true location-independent computing," said Paul O'Farrell, senior vice president and general manager, Steelhead Products Group, Riverbed.

"[That] means data can be moved, stored and backed up regardless of where facilities are located, but with performance similar to a local area network."
