CES 2014: Huawei unveils Ascend Mate 2
New 6.1-inch flagship expected to build on first-gen success
China-based electronics manufacturer Huawei this week unveiled its Huawei Ascend Mate 2 4G smartphone during International CES 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada, US.
The LTE-enabled smartphone is Huawei's new flagship and comes with a 6.1-inch IPS screen, 4050 mAh battery, a 13-megapixel BSI rear-facing camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. According to Huawei, the battery has enough power to watch six movies or listen to up to 100 hours of music on a single charge.
"With the Ascend Mate 2 4G, we are bringing the benefits and convenience of superfast connectivity to people everywhere," said Colin Giles, executive vice president, Huawei Consumer Business Group.
"The Ascend Mate 2 4G is power-packed for the mobile generation who want non-stop entertainment on the go, such as the ability to snap and download photo albums in seconds or use their smartphone as their mobile office."
Over the past year Huawei has risen through the ranks of the smartphone industry with the latest reports from IDC and research firm Strategy Analytics both indicating that the company holds the third-largest market share in the global smartphone arena as of the third quarter of 2013.
Huawei credits a lot of this success to its first generation of the Ascend Mate smartphone. Launched in early 2013, it was the world's largest smartphone at the time and said to be the first ever to be available with a 6.1-inch display.
The Ascend Mate 2 4G runs on a quad-core 1.6GHz processor and proprietary power-saving technology that Huawei claims "improves performance by more than 30% compared to other smartphones in its class". It comes with Huawei's Emotion UI 2.0, which uses One-Hand UI technology to enable single-handed operation, made easier, Huawei argues, with a 79% screen-to-body ratio. Its Floating Window function gives multi-taskers access to notes, messages, calendar and calculator, and Huawei's Simple UI aids customisationof the homescreen. The smartphone's Gloves Mode functionality supports use when wearing gloves and Driving Mode enables voice activation when on the road.
