"The undeniable success of the Galaxy Note strengthened our conviction that consumer's want higher quality features on a powerful yet portable device.

"The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is a powerful, original approach that enables users to tell the stories of their lives through dynamic and seamless expressions of their passions across work, play and life experiences. Extending the Samsung Galaxy experience, the Galaxy Gear frees users from the need to constantly check their smart devices while maintaining connections, providing ‘smart freedom,' allowing users to choose how, why, when and where they are connected."

Samsung has sought to lighten the chassis with the Note 3; it weighs 168g, as opposed to the 180g of its predecessor, the Note 2. The Note 2's 5.5-inch screen size is also improved upon: the Note 3's display is a 5.7-inch Full HD Super AMOLED.

The handset is powered by a 2.3 GHz Quad-Core processor, 3GB of RAM, 3,200 mAh battery and runs on Google's Android 4.3 Jelly Bean OS.

The enhanced new Multi Window allows users to open the same app in two windows and move content between applications via Drag and Drop mode.

The S Pen's functionality has also been enhanced, with Samsung adding new capabilities, including Air Command, a palette of features that can be activated on any screen by hovering and clicking the S Pen button. One of these features, Action Memo, enables the writing of memos that are instantly linked to actions. Users can dial phone numbers, save numbers to contacts and look up an address on a map.

Scrapbook enables users to collect and organise various types of content from multiple sources, including Web resources like YouTube, in one place.

Pen Window allows the opening of another application window without pausing current activity on the screen by simply drawing a window of any size, anywhere on the screen.

Galaxy Gear

The Gear is a connected companion device for use with Samsung's Galaxy range. It primary delivers notifications and previews of calls, texts and emails and allows the user to accept or ignore the message. A Smart Relay function pushes the message onto the smartphone display should the user decide to use the main handset.

Samsung has also integrated the Galaxy series' S Voice app into the Gear. A built-in speaker enables hands-free calls directly from the watch without the need for touching the screen. S Voice also allows the drafting of messages, creation of calendar entries, setting of alarms and weather checks on the Gear.

With the Memographer feature, a 1.9MP camera can record both photos and video on the move and share the material on social networks. Voice Memo can turn audio dictation into texts on the Galaxy parent handset.

A new security app Auto Lock automatically locks the smartphone screen when the Gear device is more than 1.5 metres away, and unlocks it when the two devices are within range again. Find My Device helps with the location of misplaced devices by making them beep, illuminate and vibrate.

Galaxy Gear also puts the user in control of the music on the parent Galaxy device allowing browsing, playing and pausing of songs even when the device is not within reach.

The Gear works like a Pedometer to track physical activity via enhanced, built-in sensor technology. This feature systematically and automatically monitors users so they can track key personal data such as calories burned, steps taken and distance covered.

Where aesthetics are concerned, Samsung has endeavoured to build a device that can serve as a fashion accessory and be worn comfortably. The watch will come preloaded with 10 different face customisation options and Samsung said more will be available for subsequent download.
