Samsung gets the time out with Galaxy Gear
Challenges wearable tech space with companion wristwatch for Galaxy range
Samsung Electronics today introduced the Galaxy Gear, designed as a wristwatch companion for its Galaxy range.
The connected device delivers notifications and previews of calls, texts and emails and allows the user to accept or ignore the message via the watch device. A Smart Relay function pushes the message onto the smartphone display should the user decide to use the main handset.
Samsung has also integrated the Galaxy series’ S Voice app into the Gear. A built-in speaker enables hands-free calls directly from the watch without the need for touching the screen. S Voice also allows the drafting of messages, creation of calendar entries, setting of alarms and weather checks on the Gear.
With the Memographer feature, a 1.9MP camera can record both photos and video on the move and share the material on social networks. Voice Memo can turn audio dictation into texts on the Galaxy parent handset.
A new security app Auto Lock automatically locks the smartphone screen when the Gear device is more than 1.5 metres away, and unlocks it when the two devices are within range again. Find My Device helps with the location of misplaced devices by making them beep, illuminate and vibrate.
Galaxy Gear also puts the user in control of the music on the parent Galaxy device allowing browsing, playing and pausing of songs even when the device is not within reach.
The Gear works like a Pedometer to track physical activity via enhanced, built-in sensor technology. This feature systematically and automatically monitors users so they can track key personal data such as calories burned, steps taken and distance covered.

Where aesthetics are concerned, Samsung has endeavoured to build a device that can serve as a fashion accessory and be worn comfortably. The watch will come preloaded with 10 different face customisation options and Samsung said more will be available for subsequent download.
“Samsung’s ongoing smart device innovation leadership reflects our commitment to listen to our consumers who want their daily lives to be easier and more enjoyable,” said JK Shin, CEO and president of IT & Mobile Division, Samsung Electronics.
“Samsung Galaxy Gear benefits consumers by integrating smart device technology even deeper into their everyday lives, and bridges the gap between the mobile device and fashion worlds to create truly wearable technology.
“Samsung Galaxy Gear frees users from the need to constantly check their smart devices while maintaining connections. It provides what we call ‘smart freedom’ by allowing users to choose how, why, when and where they are connected”.
Galaxy Gear will be launched with the Galaxy Note 3 in more than 140 countries around the world from September 25th, 2013, according to Samsung. At launch it will be available in Jet Black, Mocha Grey, Wild Orange, Oatmeal Beige, Rose Gold, and Lime Green.
No pricing information for the UAE is yet available.
