Bahrain's TRA cancels LTE auction

TRA rescinds LTE tender process 'in its entirety'

Bahrain's TRA cancels LTE auction
Bahrain has completely cancelled its LTE auction.

Bahrain TRA has cancelled the auction of LTE spectrum in the 900, 1800, 2100 and 2600 MHz bands.

The TRA said that it had rescinded "in its entirety" the invitation to tender that was issued on January 28. The tender process should have been followed by an auction on March 31.

The regulator said that it would repay the registration fee paid by each applicant.

In April, it was reported that the tender process, which was open only to Bahrain's three main operators, Batelco, Zain and Viva, was delayed by legal action by Bahraini WiMAX operator, Menatelecom, which argued that it should also have been allowed to bid for the LTE spectrum bands.

The terms of the auction had originally allowed bids from all parties, but the three incumbent mobile operators - Batelco, Viva and Zain - lobbied so that only they would be able to bid.
