Open source specialist Red Hat, Inc today announced the commercial availability of OpenShift Online, its public Platform-as-a-Service cloud offering, beginning June 11, 2013.

Since its debut in developer preview in 2011, more than 200,000 applications have been created on OpenShift Online, according to Red Hat. Designed to fill customer demand for a supported, enterprise-class public PaaS offering, the new commercial offering will enable OpenShift Online's users and developers to access Red Hat's Global Support Services.

Red Hat claimed the offering made the company "one of the only technology vendors to offer a full family of open PaaS solutions" through OpenShift Origin, the open source PaaS project; OpenShift Online, a commercial public PaaS offering; and OpenShift Enterprise, an on-premise private PaaS product.

OpenShift Online enables developers to build, launch and host applications in the public cloud. The multi-language PaaS architecture automates the provisioning, management and scaling of applications. OpenShift's support for multiple languages, including Java, Ruby, PHP, Python, Node.js, and Perl is aimed at enabling a low barrier to entry so developers can start their project more easily.

OpenShift Online is built from the OpenShift Origin open source project and leverages Red Hat Enterprise Linux and the SELinux subsystem for a "secure, multi-tenant architecture". Users and ISV partners can also take advantage of third-party extensions or build their own through OpenShift's extensible, pluggable cartridge framework.

For a monthly fee, developers subscribing to OpenShift Online's commercial offering - known as the Silver tier - will have access to technical support and additional platform resources from a number of Linux administrators and JBoss developers.

"OpenShift Online features a streamlined payment system that makes it simple for customers to access the enterprise-class strength and security of Red Hat's services," Red Hat said in an emailed statement.

Developers using OpenShift Online can purchase the Silver level service tier with a credit card, paying on a month-by-month basis for access and capacity. This service tier also offers Red Hat technical support, which can be used by developers during all phases of planning, testing, deploying, and running of applications.

The Silver service tier for OpenShift Online by Red Hat will be available in North America  beginning June 11, 2013 and in Europe the following week, with pricing starting at $20.00 per month, including a payment option for Euros. The service will be available in other countries in the coming months.
