Jumbo Shopper growth at double digits
Retailer sees line increase figures of up to 200%
Jumbo Electronics announced yesterday that, as predicted, GITEX Shopper 2012 yielded double-digit year-on-year revenue growth for the GCC retail chain.
"Tablets have been a significant contributor, with 100% growth over last year," said Vishesh Bhatia, CEO of Jumbo Electronics.
"Apple's contribution to this has been more than significant. At GITEX Shopper we were probably the largest reseller of Apple products."
Smartphone sales were also up, posting recorded growth of 80% over last year. Samsung was a clear leader in the smartphone table, followed closely by Sony and Blackberry.
"We believe Jumbo was the largest retailer in [the smarphone] category as well," said Bhatia.
Sony Bravia televisions also moved quickly, recording 200% growth.
"We believe [the Sony television growth] was fuelled by our special offer, in which Jumbo customers received a AED 500 Sony voucher on purchases of AED 1500 and above," Bhatia commented.
Bhatia believes that footfall also played a significant role in the burgeoning figures. As Shopper returned to its original home at the Dubai World Trade Centre, the dedicated Metro Station at DWTC proved an added convenience and incentive for consumers.
"GITEX Shopper is an enormous event and the logistics of managing any participation is complex," Bhatia added.
"This year for example we had over 300 people on site at any time, 30 point-of-sale terminals and 10, 40-foot containers. Whilst the April edition will be shorter with four days, instead of eight, my suggestion is that UAE retailers co-operate closely with DWTC to form a panel to support the growth of Shopper through to mutual benefit. Working together we can build an even stronger product and make sure we deliver enhanced experiences for both the Dubai residents and visitors."
