Batman to help Nokia tackle app shortage
The caped crusader may add some much-needed punch to Nokia's app image.

Nokia is enlisting the help of Batman and Lady Gaga, among others, to give a much-needed lift to its apps profile, as Apple and Google share 85% of the smartphone market, Bloomberg reported.

The Finnish handset vendor plans to partner with Walt Disney and DreamWorks Animation to build a range that will capture large fan bases, countering the low app volume for its devices.

The Batman app, built exclusively for Nokia by Foursquare Labs, allows players to fight as either the superhero or his enemy, Bane, while a free music service lets Lumia users listen to exclusive playlists created by Lady Gaga, Lana Del Rey and Rihanna.

As Nokia's new Windows 8 devices prepare to ship, the company hopes the popularity of the new apps will balance out the low availability of apps for the platform. Android and iPhone handset owners can choose from more than 600,000 apps, approximately six times the number available for Windows Phone.
