Don't buy iPad 3 in first month - retailer
Would-be buyers better to wait until official channels have stock
Apple enthusiasts should hold off on buying the hotly anticipated new iPad device for the first month after its release, according to a senior executive at a regional electronics retailer.
Ashish Panjabi, COO of UAE-based Jacky's Electronics, claims that the price of the iPad will escalate rapidly after it arrives on UAE shores.
The global release date of the new iPad, which features an improved high resolution screen and faster processor, is 16th March. However, Panjabi says it will not reach the UAE until the end of March.
"It should be [available] around the end of the third week of March, beginning of the fourth, but I would advise people to wait a month before they buy it," he told Arabian Business.
"It will be very expensive initially, because it is not coming through distribution a direct distribution channel, it comes via third parties, who add a mark up. Initially it's just wherever we can get it. It's the same for all retailers.
"It happens every time [a new product is launched]," he added. "People end up complaining that it's too expensive, but it's not us, we buy it more expensive. Prices usually stabilise within a month or so."
The iPad has proved hugely popular around the globe since the launch of its first iteration in 2010, with millions of units shipped worldwide.
The general manager for Dubai-based retailer Plug-Ins said delivery time to the region was likely to be shorter than it was for the first version.
"The iPad 1 wasn't officially available for months," Omar Abushaban said. "The iPad 2 turnaround time was quicker, I think it was a couple of weeks.
"We are expecting about the same time for the iPad 3, so around the end of March. Especially with Apple launching their website late last year, I don't think the turnaround time will be significant."
He added that most retailers would not be taking pre-orders, due to unpredictable delivery schedules.
