Sony, Samsung LCD partnership to end
Sony holds almost 50% stake in S-LCD joint venture
Sony’s joint LCD venture with Samsung is coming to an end after Sony warned in November of a fourth year of losses in its television unit, according to Reuters.
Sony’s television unit is set to lose $2.2 billion on sagging demand and an increasing yen.
A Samsung spokesman told Reuters that the two companies will make an announcement regarding the joint venture on Monday.
Sony holds almost a 50% stake in LCD joint venture S-LCD, established in April 2004 to secure stable supplies of the component.
According to Reuters, shares in Sony were up 1.75% and Samsung Electronics shares traded flat as of 0535 GMT.
Samsung is the world's number one TV maker, while Sony and LG Electronics vie for the number two spot.
