10 billion downloads from Google Android Market
Android Market hits 10 billion mark, now getting 1 billion downloads per month
Google has hit the 10 billion app download mark for the Android Market, just over three years since launch.
The company reports it is now seeing up to one billion downloads per month from Android Market.
In comparison, Apple's App Store hit the 10 billion download mark in January 2011, after around two and a half years of operation.
Downloads from the Android Market have been growing exponentially, with one billion downloads in the first 20 months, another five months to reach two billion, then two months to reach three billion. It then hit 4.5 billion in a further two months, and two months again to reach six billion.
"One billion is a pretty big number by any measurement. However, when it's describing the speed at which something is growing, it's simply amazing. This past weekend, thanks to Android users around the world, Android Market exceeded 10 billion app downloads-with a growth rate of one billion app downloads per month. We can't wait to see where this accelerating growth takes us in 2012," wrote Eric Chu, director, Android Developer Ecosystem, on the Google Mobile Blog.
