Leaked email says netbooks will be dropped in favour of ultrabooks

Samsung may be exiting the netbook sector, to switch to ultrabooks.

Samsung may be set to drop its netbook range in favour of ultrabooks, according to a leaked email reported by the Blogeee.net blog, part of CNet France.

The email, apparently from Samsung to a dealer, said that it would stop production of 10.1 inch netbooks in the first quarter of next year, and focus instead on ultraportable 11.6 and 12 inch devices, and a range of ultrabooks that would launch in 2012.

The mail cited a new strategy as being behind the changes.

The move would put more pressure on Intel's Atom processor business, which saw a 32% year-on-year decline in revenue in Q3 2011. Sales of netbooks have been declining since 2010, in part impacted by the rise of tablet devices.
