Whiteboards are easy to use, robust and ‘magical’ in the case of the SP800.

Education sector firm Smart Technologies has chosen GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK to showcase its latest pair of whiteboard products.

The first is the SP400, which regional director Aaron Fright describes as both easy to use and robust, as well as being fully touch enabled. Make the step up to the SP800 series, however, and the experience is deemed by Fright as being truly ‘magical’.

‘It’s easy to use, both for teachers and students, which creates and promotes really engaging ways of learning. It’s multitouch and it also has gesture support, with object awareness. Whether you’re using your fist, a hand or any device, it can be used to select items and interact with the board. We also have 3D this year,” explains Fright.

Many commentators have questioned the popularity and usefulness of 3D, especially in a classroom environment, but Fright say that it is no gimmick, especially in the education market, where there is a demand for its illustrative capabilities.

“A lot of our education solutions have been using the document camera for a number of years now, but with our latest version of smart notebook software, version 10.8, it really permits the use of 3D content so if you’re doing a science or history lesson, I can pick up a skull or molecule structure and with my document camera, rotate it 360 degrees, getting a full perspective on that object. As a pupil, it makes it really engaging,” he believes.

“Or for example, if I’m an architect in a building environment, I can have my mockup and create a 3D object out of it,” continues Fright.
