Twitter has 100 million active users monthly
Twitter says 200 million users have registered on its site, though 40% of those users do not tweet themselves
Social networking and micro-blogging site Twitter now has 100 million active users monthly reports MSNBC's Technolog site. The information was released by CEO Dick Costolo to reporters though the statement was also tweeted live, as Costolo made his remarks.
A claimed 200 million users have registered on Twitter to date. It is said that 55% of those users engage with the site via their handheld devices. "We've seen tremendous growth with mobile - about 40% increase quarter over quarter," explained Costolo.
Costola also let on that Twitter's product development team is moving ahead full steam in a bid to simplify the site's interface and make it "more consistent across devices" such as phones, tablets and fully fledged computers.
Another stat that was released indicated that 40% of Twitter's users do not tweet but rather follow the tweets of other users.
Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey and launched in July of the same year. The site enables users to send and receive text-based posts with a maximum limit of 140 characters.
