Swiss structured cabling R&M has been awarded the iF Product Design Award 2011 for its Cat. 6A module.

The International Forum Design (iF) praised the product for the design and user-friendliness of its new RJ45 connector socket for data networks.

In explaining its choice, a spokesperson for the panel said: "The clear lines of the design in red and white underscore the message: Swiss quality."

Martin Reichle, CEO of R&M, commented: "This design award confirms that R&M always offers far more than just a connector. He added that the Cat. 6A module stood for revolutionary innovation plus good design, top quality, extensive functionality, easy handling and long-lasting use.

The iF Product Design Award is one of the world's oldest design competitions and is being staged for the 57th time. In 2011, the panel of international experts picked 993 winners from 2756 submissions.

The award judges products by design quality, as well as craftsmanship and choice of materials, degree of innovation and environmental compatibility. Functionality and ergonomics are also considered in the evaluation, in addition to visualisation and safety, brand value and universal design aspects.

R&M claims it is one of the largest companies in Switzerland with more than 600 employees. It generates more than 75% of its sales outside of its native land, and invests around $9 million in research and development every year.
