VMware announces log-in management for cloud apps
VMware Horizon App Manager will allow users to access all cloud apps with a single log-in
Virtualisation and cloud infrastructure company VMware has announced a user-centric log-in management service for accessing cloud applications called the VMware Horizon App Manager.
The App Manager is part of VMware's Project Horizon, which will give users' access to a range of application types, virtual Windows desktops and data resources through a secure and controlled environment.
"The mobile and cloud era dictates anywhere, any device access to applications within and outside the firewall, and introduces fundamental new challenges to the traditional enterprise security and management model," said Brian Byun, vice president and general manager, Cloud Applications, VMware. "VMware Horizon App Manager addresses these challenges by re-inventing end-user identity and application management as a cloud service, and providing an easier way for IT and users to embrace a new way to work."
The VMware Horizon App Manager is designed as a service hub that can securely extend a users' identity in systems such as Microsoft Active Directory or other directory options, into third-party public cloud applications such as Box.net, BroadVision, Google, Salesforce.com, WebEx and Workday. This service is designed to simplify the management of multiple user credentials across a range of cloud application and services.
According to VMware, the Horizon App Manager can ensure a user's security across both private and public clouds and provides an open platform for accessing cloud applications within a single application portal, meaning users can access a wide range of applications from a wide range of devices using a single sign-on.
The Horizon portal interface gives allows users to see the applications they are signed up for and access both work and business applications.
The App also enables IT administrators to more easily control permissions for enterprise apps through a centralised application log. The VMware Horizon App Manager does not require enterprises to invest in further hardware but adds on to existing IT infrastructure.
The App Manager supports a wide range of internet browsers, including Internet Explorer 7 +, Firefox 3.5 + and Safari 5 and employs standards based authentication via Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) and Open Authentication (Oauth). It also offers multi-factor authentication, including options from RSA.
For legacy applications, the Horizon App Manager provides split-key identity storage in VMware Horizon's secure identity vault.
IT administrators can also access applications by category such as; by user, group or role, and can identify which entities within the enterprise have control of various applications.
The Horizon App Manager is available via trials in the EMEA, which customers can sign up to today.
