Thuraya appoints new CEO

Samer Halawi to take lead at Thuraya as Yousuf Al Sayed returns to Etisalat

Thuraya Telecommunications Company has announced the appointment of Samer Halawi as chief executive officer.

Halawi joins Thuraya from digital media content services company Intigral, where he was chief strategy and business development officer. He has previously held roles with a number of telecoms companies in the region, including Inmarsat, ICO Global Communications, and FLAG Telecom.

Mohammad Omran, chairman of Thuraya said: “The mobile satellite market is going through dynamic changes at global levels. We at Thuraya believe that Mr. Halawi has excellent market know-how and the leadership qualities that will enable our company to capitalize on the many opportunities emerging in the industry, and that will drive Thuraya towards greater levels of growth and prosperity.”

Halawi replaces Yousuf Al Sayed, who will rejoin the Etisalat Group, a major shareholder in Thuraya. Al Sayed, who joined the project to establish Thuraya in 1995, and became CEO in 1998, will hold a seat on the Thuraya board.
