The femtocell technology is expected to reduce the handover failures by up to 80%.

Du, the UAE's second telecom operator, is planning to deploy femtocell technology from vendor Alcatel-Lucent to improve its indoor mobile coverage for individual and commercial customers.

Alcatel-Lucent said it will provide its 9360 Small Cell portfolio, which consists of femtocells for home and enterprise use. The vendor added that the technology will help in improving indoor voice and data services, thus reducing the handover failures by up to 80%.

Farid Faraidooni, chief commercial officer of Du, said: "Building on Alcatel-Lucent's Small Cells approach, we can satisfy the increasingly demanding mobile service requirements of our residential and business subscribers with high quality voice and high-speed data services, no matter where they are and through any 3G-enabled device."

In October, UAE incumbent Etisalat deployed the first femtocell project in the UAE. Etisalat also used technology provided by Alcatel-Lucent.
