Driver testing goes tablet

Online assessment and certification specialist Pearson Vue has announced it is launching what it believes to be the world’s most high-tech driver testing system, in consultation with the UAE’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

Speaking at GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK, Pearson Vue commercial Director Suzana Lopes says the initiative is going to be launched soon. “Everybody that needs to take a drivers license in the Dubai region is going to be using our system to take the test,” she says.

Starting with the firm’s standard system, Pearson Vue worked in consultation with the RTA to “localise and customise” it to fit the  specific requirements associated with the test.

“For the RTA, we’re doing the theory test and the practical test. It’s online, which means that when they’re doing the practical test, there’s a teacher in the car with a student with a handheld device, a tablet, and as the student is going through the test, he can be scored right away via the tablet. And the results are immediate,” explains Lopes.

Pearson Vue offers online solutions for what Lopes describes as “high-stakes assessments,” meaning correct candidate identification is of major importance.
“You need to make sure the person who’s taking the test is the person is actually the person who should take the test,” she says, explaining that tests are undertaken at one of the firm’s 5000 test centres, where a range of biometric identity parameters are gathered – including palm vein scans, ID checks and digital photographs – by certified RTA test administrators.

The move from paper to online testing means that clients can assess candidates more easily.
