Staying true to their word, Bahrain's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority disconnected over 400,000 unregistered mobile phone lines today, local daily Bahrain Tribune reported.

The TRA, along with the country's mobile operators, Batelco, Viva and Zain, had warned users that they must register personal details by midnight on 31st August or have their service cut off.

"As per the warning of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) and with the due consent from Batelco, Zain and Viva, there will be no extension for the registration of the prepaid mobile lines," an official at the Kingdom's watchdog confirmed to the Tribune.

In the past, mobile users in Bahrain could register pre-paid lines anonymously but the recent decision was taken to safeguard security and public safety as anonymous users could engage in illegal activities.
